Research Interests

The Brain Research and Repair Laboratories research focus is primarily on cerebrovascular disease. The models that are used in our research include both in vitro models (cell culture), in vivo models (focal ischemia in mice and zebrafish). We are interested in understanding the pathogenesis underlying cerebrovascular diseases but a significant portion of our attention is focused on developing new treatment and brain repair strategies. To this end, we have been successful in developing two new novel treatments, which are undergoing further testing before they are taken to the clinic.

We have a particular interest in ischemic preconditioning, a fascinating phenomenon whereby animals exposed to sublethal or mild insults develop protection against subsequent severe insults. We have developed a mouse model of ischemic preconditioning which is used extensively in our research efforts.

Other projects in our research portfolio include ALS pathogenesis and treatment, Fragile X syndrome, multiple sclerosis and retinal ischemia.
